Somerville Pinoy Goods

I'd been coming and going to SPG for a while now, but just haven't updated my photos.  I went here twice in the past week.  Once to dine-in with my mom to eat crispy pata, pork BBQ, and la paz bachoy, all great suggestions by the owner, Cynthia Conshue.  As in previous posts from other Filipino places, I continue to be amused by the different ways that Filipinos can cook pork, albeit so unhealthy!  The other time I went, I ordered grilled squid to-go, which was stuffed with tomatoes and onions.  The homemade soy dipping sauce gives a spicy & vinegar-tinged kick to any grilled or fried food.

SPG stands out with its grilled offerings which include chicken, pork, squid, and tilapia.  I really enjoyed the crispy pata and squid, as those are foods that my dad could cook but does not always have the time to.  If ever I am in the mood for comfort food, to SPG is where I will go.

After a few stops & starts with its kitchen renovation, Somerville Pinoy Goods is now running in full swing.  You can go grocery shopping or watch TFC channel while you eat carinderia style, or do all of the above.   The place offers a variety of Filipino goodies from sweet to savory, ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook-yourself at home.  I've tried the kutchinta mix which produced something of a puto/kutchinta hybrid.  I've picked up staples like sweet chili sauce for my lumpiang shanghai and frozen longganisa.  I've also tried their daily specials, which include beef mami, kare kare (peanut stew), sinigang (sour soup), pancit (noodles), and cassava... it was yummy in my Filipino tummy!  I imagine the specials change daily, but at the price of $5.75 for 2 entrees with rice, you might as well try them all.  It's also a family-run business that's kid-friendly, and if your kids are good, they might just get a free balloon animal!

P.S.  I take credit for suggesting this place to urbanspoon!
